The six works shortlisted for the prize this year include Imperial Creatures, by Timothy P. Barnard, which looks at the relationship between humans and animals in colonial Singapore; Sembawang, by John Miksic, which examines how the Singapore port influenced trade; and Home Is Where We Are, by Sukhinder Singh, which explores the role of family members in the development of Singapore’s identity.
This year’s prize theme is “resonance,” reflecting the way in which literature can spark emotions and memories. Organizers hope that the 2022 biennial Singapore Literature Prize will encourage readers to think about the resonance of their personal relationships with each other, as well as the impact that literature can have on their communities and societies.
