The HK Prize 2024 will be awarded to outstanding scientists and research teams based in Hong Kong or Hong Kong universities’ branches or research-related institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for their scientific and technological innovation and transformation achievements. The Prize also aims to reward outstanding science-related projects that have great social or economic value. The review procedure of this award is performed in accordance with scientific and standardized standards, with the objective of judging the candidates’ scientific and technological innovations and transformational impact. No individual or organization can exert undue influence on the review process. The winner of this award will receive a gold medal and an engraved trophy, as well as cash prize equivalent to the amount of the Prize.
Six artists have been shortlisted for the third edition of a Hong Kong art prize named after Swiss collector Uli Sigg. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in December and each will receive a HKD 100,000 grant to support their future arts projects. The finalists include Shanghai-based multimedia artist Bi Rongrong; Macau-born ceramicist Heidi Lau; Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist Pan Daijing; and Hong Kong artist Wong Ping. Each of the finalists will exhibit their work at the Hong Kong Museum of Art’s M+ gallery in September next year.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has increased the prize money for its Group 1 races at Sha Tin and Happy Valley to a total of HK$188 million (US$24.2 million) for the Mark Six Lunar New Year snowball draw on February 2. A single winning ticket will scoop HK$188 million, with the runner-up taking HK$100,000 and the third placing HK$50,000.
US lawmakers from across the political spectrum have nominated Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling them a global inspiration in the face of Beijing’s crackdown on dissent. The group of nine lawmakers wrote in a letter to the Nobel committee that they estimate more than two million people took to the streets in June, one of the largest mass protests in history.
