Established in 1854 from a gift of PS200 from WC Wentworth, this prize seeks to reward an outstanding essay addressing a nominated question. Each year, the committee selects a topic of current interest and invites scholars from a wide range of disciplines to contribute an essay. The Committee reserves the right to award a joint prize if it deems that two or more submissions are of equal, high, and sufficient merit.

Each month, the Hillman Foundation recognizes journalists whose work “illuminates critical issues for working people and fosters social and economic justice.” The Hillman prize is named after Sidney Hillman, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) union, which was a predecessor of Unite Here and Workers United (now SEIU). The Foundation’s board includes former ACWA leaders as well as left-leaning celebrity Danny Glover.
In this month’s issue, the editors of AJL present their choices for the 2020 Sidney Awards, given by the magazine to writers whose long-form essays have made the biggest impact on public discourse. The award selections are based on a broad range of criteria, including their overall impact and significance, the originality and depth of the argument, and the quality of writing. The editors also consider the extent to which the pieces have moved readers to action and inspired change.
